\n\nLike many in the software development industry, I find [Heroku][heroku] to be an\namazing product. It was so ahead of everything else at the time, it was\nunbelievable. It certainly made things a lot easier for me when I was starting\nout as a developer by letting me avoid all the pains of handling servers.\nClients appreciated it and I had no worries that something would go down.\nManaging deployments manually was tough, and still is. That\nis if you don’t containerize your code with [Docker][docker] or the likes of\nit.\n\nNow, I’m not a professional DevOps guy. That is I don’t do it as a full-time\njob. However, I had to set up things too many times at this point, and I know\nthat different team sizes, and tech stacks require different tools.\n\nWorth noting that by *developers* in this piece I primarily mean solo\ndevelopers. Bigger teams require a different approach. Most early startups\nwould fall into solo developer category though.\n\n### Dokku\n\nWhen people grow out of [Heroku][heroku], the first thing they usually find is\n[Dokku][dokku]. It’s a simple way to manage Docker containers without messing\nwith more complex configurations, and it’s more than enough for most solo\ndevelopers as the majority of apps and websites don’t get enough traffic for it\nnot to enough.\n\nA few steps:\n\n1. getting a server from Digital Ocean, Linode or AWS;\n2. initial set up of said server;\n3. one simple script from the Dokku website;\n4. in your repo: `git remote add dokku $server`;\n5. when deploying: `git push`.\n\nAnd that’s it, a replacement for Heroku.\n\nIn years of service, Dokku has never failed me. Sure, there were edge cases but\nthose were resolved quickly using the project’s Github issues.\n\n### A case against external services\n\nEven though there are popular platform-as-a-service solutions like [Vercel\n(Zeit)][vercel] and [Netlify][netlify], I believe that developers should\nself-host their apps more often than not.\n\n- It would help you understand a lot more about Unix systems, server infrastructure, and network.\n- You would gain a product advantage, given you have an edge case that you most likely will, eventually.\n- An external service puts you in a place of total dependency. Historically, these services have had a lot of changes. Sometimes, breaking changes. You don’t want to be in that situation.\n\nI’ve used all of the services above. To state the obvious, it’s a good deal for\nmost developers even though the pricing is higher. Why? Because managing\nservers ourselves is time-consuming and error-prone if that is not your main\nactivity. You don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night by the message\nsaying “your server is down”.\n\nHowever, things are now much easier in the self-hosted world than they have\never been before. Reproducible environments with containers and mature tooling\nallow one to leave Heroku but not yet start messing with clusters.\n\nThat happened to me. Once Docker became a must in my toolbox, there was no\nreason for me to continue relying on an external party. Headache was simply no\nlonger there.\n\n### Enter Caprover\n\nI have the following containerized, self-hosted and served through\n[Cloudflare][cloudflare] as well as checked with [uptimerobot][uptimerobot]:\n\n- [Matomo][matomo] (web-analytics, an alternative to Google Analytics)\n- [Ackee][ackee] (web-analytics, a simpler alternative to Google Analytics)\n- [Sendy][sendy] (newsletters with AWS SES)\n- [Minio][minio] (AWS S3-compatible storage)\n- [Monica][monica] (personal CRM)\n\n[Caprover][caprover] is how I deploy and manage all of it with good ol’ SSH\nwhen needed. Deploying a new app is a matter of a few clicks. The support of\nDocker Swarm is a cherry on top.\n\n### Business case\n\nAs mentioned above, chances are – external services will limit your ability to\nadd features to your product. It could be a fancy Nginx/Apache configuration,\ncustom domains for your users, or tweaking low-level performance.\n\nOutages are bad, but it’s even worse when outages are out of your control. If\nyou have the knowledge to set it up and have all the tools to know when\nsomething goes wrong, it’s an advantage on your side.\n\nBusiness-wise, you know that the companies behind these services target the\nbiggest market. It means that if your product falls out of that\nrange, you’re left behind as you are an edge case to that service provider.\n\n### Community\n\nI stumbled upon some solid advice and enormous lists of ready-to-use solutions\non subreddit [/r/selfhosted][reddit-selfhosted] and\n[awesome-selfhosted][awesome-selfhosted].\n\nThe big open-source community lets you be sure that possible problems with\nsetting up and configurations are more likely already solved and they can be\neasily found.\n\n### Privacy\n\nIt’s important. As a technologist, I understand that the whole industry operates\non duct tape, and trusting corporations to respect your users’ privacy is not\nat all realistic or rational.\n\nA simple example in favor of self-hosted solutions: millions of people use ad\nblockers. There is no need for you to use Google Analytics as it gets blocked,\nworsens your reputation, and feeds big G’s network. Self-hosted alternatives\nlike [Matomo][matomo] or even something simple like [Ackee][ackee] might be enough.\n\nOr you could replace Slack at your company with [Mattermost][mattermost] and be\nsure that your internal communication is in safe hands – yours.\n\n### Summary\n\nAs you can see there is a decent amount of upside for you to start\nself-hosting. Of course, it doesn’t mean we have to give up nice-to-have\nservices but I gained a lot of value by doing so. Однако, я настраивал среды запуска много раз и знаю, что размеры\nкоманды и наборы технологий требуют разных решений.\n\nСтоит отметить, что под разработчиками в этой статье, я подразумеваю соло\nразработчиков. Большим командам подойдет другой подход, хотя многие стартапы на\nначальной стадии попадут в категорию соло разработчиков.\n\n### Докку\n\nКогда люди вырастают из [Хироку][heroku], первой альтернативой обычно является\n[Докку][dokku]. Исторически, эти сервисы меняют свою позицию на рынке вводя не совместимые с предыдущей версией обновления. Но ты ведь не хочешь оказаться в такой ситуации.\n\nЯ использовал все перечисленные сервисы выше. Скажу очевидное, они хороши\nнесмотря на то, что их конечная стоимость окажется выше. Почему? Потому что\nразворачивать свою среду занимает много времени и есть высокие шансы ошибиться\nесли это не единственное, чем ты занимаешься. Как говорили “олды” в 90-х, ты не\nхочешь проснуться в три утра от того, что один из твоих сервисов упал[^downtime].\n\nОднако этот аргумент все менее и менее актуален. Хостить среду самому сейчас\nлегче чем когда-либо. Легко воспроизводимые среды с контейнерами и наработанные\nинструменты позволяют уйти с Хироку, но пока не разворачивать кластеры.\n\nТак и случилось у меня. Как только Докер стал постояльцем в моем\nинструментарии, более не было причин продолжать зависеть от внешних сервисов.\nГоловной боли больше не было.\n\n### Про Кэпровер\n\nПеречисленные ниже приложения у меня запущены в контейнерах, выданные через\n[Клаудфлэр][cloudflare], где они отслеживаются через [аптаймробот][аптаймробот]:\n\n- [Матомо][matomo] (веб-аналитика, замена Гугл Аналитике)\n- [Эки][ackee] (веб-аналитика, замена Гугл Аналитике попроще)\n- [Сэнди][sendy] (рассылка с AWS SES)\n- [Минио][minio] (AWS S3-совместимое хранение)\n- [Моника][monica] (личный CRM)\n\n[Кэпровер][caprover] это то как я запускаю и управляю всем выше. Если есть\nзнания по установлению всех настроек все установить и позаботиться о\nпомощниках, которые уведомят в случае того, если что-то упало – одни\nпреимущества.\n\nСо стороны бизнеса, ты понимаешь, что компании за этими сервисами целятся на\nбольшую часть рынка. Это значит, что если твой продукт не находится в категории\nбольшинства, ты не являешься главной заботой этого поставщика услуг.\n\n### Сообщество\n\nЯ нашел много дельных советов и огромное количество ПО готового к\nиспользованию на сабреддите [/r/selfhosted][reddit-selfhosted] и Гитхабе\n[awesome-selfhosted][awesome-selfhosted].\n\nБольшое сообщество разработчиков ПО с открытым исходным кодом позволяет быть\nуверенным в том, что возможные проблемы с настройкой, запуском и конфигурацией,\nскорее всего, уже решены и их легко найти.\n\n### Конфиденциальность\n\nОчень важный пункт. Как технолог, я понимаю, что вся индустрия держится на\nизоленте. Доверять корпорациям, ожидая от них соблюдения конфиденциальности,\nнереалистично и нерационально.\n\nПростой пример в пользу своей инфраструктуры: миллионы людей используют\nблокировщиков рекламы. It’s\nrelatively a good deal for Canadian companies because the cost of application\nis just around CAD$1k. Compared to the US, it’s 5-10x less.\n\nA **strong safety net**. Stereotypes of Canadians attract me more than those of any\nother nation. People joke that people here are kind and that “Sorry” is the\ndefault reaction to everything. That’s more true than not. I’m yet to see an\naltercation.\n\nIt’s **safe**. Both crime and health-wise. Healthcare comparison with the USA\nis beating a dead horse at this point.\n\n**Biggest reservoirs of freshwater** worldwide. Quite important during climate\nchange of the 22^nd century.\n\n**Close proximity to the US** and its strong economy. To state the obvious,\nCanada benefits economically from the strong economy down the border. Canadian\npassport holders have access to NAFTA and its TN visa as well as the E2 Treaty\nInvestor visa.\n\n**Brain gain**. There aren’t many countries in the world that have positive\nbrain gain and one Canada has recently become [the number one in OECD\ncountries][ref] in terms of attracted talent.\n\nAs you can see, there are many reasons why Canada is a great country. Signing up for Stripe, PayPal, and other processors.\n4. Running your business.\n5. Optional: step of moving to a country with territorial taxation to decrease your total tax burden.\n\nSurprisingly, the best jurisdictions worldwide aren’t banana republics but the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Singapore is a solid choice for some too. Their stable economies and reliable legal system with modern banking are attractive to founders worldwide.\n\nOf course, the devil is in the details. There are different types of entities available in these jurisdictions, and not all might fit your requirements. I was in that situation myself a few years ago. There wasn’t much to choose from, but luckily you have more options now. It’s possible to start a company remotely in the UK and US and set up efficient taxation if you’re willing to relocate. It’s a perfect solution for location-independent founders and professionals from developing countries.\n\n## USA\n\n### Wyoming\n\nWyoming is one of the best states to register an online venture if you’re not looking to raise funds. As a company of one: indie hacker, bootstrapper, or freelancer, Wyoming’s LLC is the best option in my experience. There’s no personal or corporate income tax, which means that Wyoming LLC can be transparent for tax purposes. It’s also called a disregarded entity or a pass-through entity which means that LLC’s profits will pass through to its members.\n\nRegistering a company in Wyoming is easy. You can do so via [Wyoming Agents][wyomingagents] yourself or opt for all-in-one services like [Firstbase][firstbase], [Freedom Surfer][freedomsurfer] or [StartFleet][startfleet] (they have a [detailed guide for non-US residents](https://startfleet.io/guide/us-llc-for-non-residents-guide). If you opt for manual registration, you’ll have to get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). I did it with [HelloFax][hellofax] fax. When I did it, they only supported fax as a method of obtaining EIN for disregarded entities. A simple call to IRS using Google Voice, Skype, or Hushed will work. They’ll fax you your EIN during the call. EIN will allow you to register for Stripe and similar services.\n\nAt some point, you’ll need to get a virtual address in the US to receive your business card and other paperwork. I’ve been using [VirtualPostMail][vpm], and it’s been pretty good so far. Their addresses worked everywhere for me.\n\nThen, getting a bank account with [Mercury][mercury] and other services I shared earlier, and you’re ready for business. It’s possible to open a bank account with Bank of America, but you’ll have to pay a visit personally.\n\n### Delaware\n\nHowever, LLCs make more sense if you’re not looking to raise investments. Of course, it’s worth mentioning [Stripe’s Atlas program][stripeatlas] for corporations in Delaware. I’ve used [Firstbase][firstbase] and had no issues with them.\n\n## United Kingdom\n\nUK Limited Liability Partnership is regarded as a “corporate body,” the same as a company. It requires two partners, but it’s not subject to Corporate Tax. It’s possible to structure it in a way that allows you only to pay personal income tax based in the place of your actual residence.\n\nI registered LLP with [Freedom Surfer][freedomsurfer]’s package. Once you get a Certificate of Incorporation, you can open an account with Transferwise or HSBC UK, which you’ll have to visit personally.\n\n## Singapore\n\n[Sleek][sleek] - incorporation in Singapore and Hong Kong. They’ll help provide an entrepreneur visa in Singapore if your capital is over SG$80k, which might be a bit steep if you’re starting and don’t have that much money. However, their services include registration, secretary, and accounting via the online platform.\n\n[Pikohana][pikohana] - offers incorporation in Singapore. It’s a perfect solution for location-independent founders and professionals from developing countries.\n\n## USA\n\n### Wyoming\n\nWyoming is one of the best states to register an online venture if you’re not looking to raise funds. As a company of one: indie hacker, bootstrapper, or freelancer, Wyoming’s LLC is the best option in my experience. There’s no personal or corporate income tax, which means that Wyoming LLC can be transparent for tax purposes. It’s also called a disregarded entity or a pass-through entity which means that LLC’s profits will pass through to its members.\n\nRegistering a company in Wyoming is easy. You can do so via [Wyoming Agents][wyomingagents] yourself or opt for all-in-one services like [Firstbase][firstbase], [Freedom Surfer][freedomsurfer] or [StartFleet][startfleet] (they have a [detailed guide for non-US residents](https://startfleet.io/guide/us-llc-for-non-residents-guide). If you opt for manual registration, you’ll have to get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). I did it with [HelloFax][hellofax] fax. When I did it, they only supported fax as a method of obtaining EIN for disregarded entities. A simple call to IRS using Google Voice, Skype, or Hushed will work. They’ll fax you your EIN during the call. EIN will allow you to register for Stripe and similar services.\n\nAt some point, you’ll need to get a virtual address in the US to receive your business card and other paperwork. Довольно важный пункт учитывая\nреалии изменения климата в 22^ом столетии.\n\n**Близость с США** и ее экономикой. It’s a perfect solution for location-independent founders and professionals from developing countries.\n\n## USA\n\n### Wyoming\n\nWyoming is one of the best states to register an online venture if you’re not looking to raise funds. As a company of one: indie hacker, bootstrapper, or freelancer, Wyoming’s LLC is the best option in my experience. There’s no personal or corporate income tax, which means that Wyoming LLC can be transparent for tax purposes. It’s also called a disregarded entity or a pass-through entity which means that LLC’s profits will pass through to its members.\n\nRegistering a company in Wyoming is easy. \n\nКак и многие в индустрии разработки ПО[^software], я нахожу [Хироку][heroku] удивительным\nпродуктом. Они были впереди всех в свое время, было просто невероятно.\nОпределенно, их сервис облегчил работу и мне когда я начинал запускать проекты,\nпозволив мне избежать всех трудностей ручной настройки серверов. Клиенты\nоценили стабильность, а я не беспокоился о том, что где-то что-то сломается.\nРазвертывать среду вручную до сих пор непросто. Только если ты не упаковываешь все в контейнеры с помощью [Докер][docker] и ему\nподобными инструментами.\n\nЯ не профессиональный DevOps, в том смысле, что я не занимаюсь этим в фулл-тайм\nграфике. Однако, я настраивал среды запуска много раз и знаю, что размеры\nкоманды и наборы технологий требуют разных решений.\n\nСтоит отметить, что под разработчиками в этой статье, я подразумеваю соло\nразработчиков. Большим командам подойдет другой подход, хотя многие стартапы на\nначальной стадии попадут в категорию соло разработчиков.\n\n### Докку\n\nКогда люди вырастают из [Хироку][heroku], первой альтернативой обычно является\n[Докку][dokku]. Довольно простой инструмент для управления контейнерами без\nсложных конфигураций. Главное, что его может быть достаточно для большинства\nприложений и веб-сайтов где трафик не требует большего.\n\nНесколько шагов:\n\n1. сервер от Digital Ocean, Linode или AWS;\n2. первоначальная настройка этого сервера;\n3. один скрипт с сайта Докку;\n4. в твоем репозитории: `git remote add dokku $server`;\n5. `git push`.\n\nВот и замена Хироку.\n\nЗа несколько лет пользования Докку, он ни разу не подводил. Свою работу выполняет\nна ура. Конечно, бывают ситуации где что-то требует настройки, но это быстро\nрешается поиском на Гитхабе проекта.\n\n### Довод против внешних сервисов\n\nНесмотря на существование популярных платформ-как-сервисов[^paas], таких как\n[Версел (Zeit)][vercel] и [Нетлифай][netlify], я того мнения, что разработчикам\nследует размещать свои приложения самостоятельно. Пользы от этого достаточно:\n\n- Понять как устроены Юникс, серверная инфраструктура, сеть.\n- Получить преимущество для своего продукта, путем того, что “необычные” случаи будут решаться легче, чем на перечисленных сервисах. Стоит вопрос времени, когда это произойдет, а не о том произойдет это в целом или нет.\n- Внешний сервис ставит твой продукт в положение полной зависимости. Исторически, эти сервисы меняют свою позицию на рынке вводя не совместимые с предыдущей версией обновления. Но ты ведь не хочешь оказаться в такой ситуации.\n\nЯ использовал все перечисленные сервисы выше. Скажу очевидное, они хороши\nнесмотря на то, что их конечная стоимость окажется выше. Почему? Потому что\nразворачивать свою среду занимает много времени и есть высокие шансы ошибиться\nесли это не единственное, чем ты занимаешься. Как говорили “олды” в 90-х, ты не\nхочешь проснуться в три утра от того, что один из твоих сервисов упал[^downtime].\n\nОднако этот аргумент все менее и менее актуален. Хостить среду самому сейчас\nлегче чем когда-либо. Легко воспроизводимые среды с контейнерами и наработанные\nинструменты позволяют уйти с Хироку, но пока не разворачивать кластеры.\n\nТак и случилось у меня. Как только Докер стал постояльцем в моем\nинструментарии, более не было причин продолжать зависеть от внешних сервисов.\nГоловной боли больше не было.\n\n### Про Кэпровер\n\nПеречисленные ниже приложения у меня запущены в контейнерах, выданные через\n[Клаудфлэр][cloudflare], где они отслеживаются через [аптаймробот][аптаймробот]:\n\n- [Матомо][matomo] (веб-аналитика, замена Гугл Аналитике)\n- [Эки][ackee] (веб-аналитика, замена Гугл Аналитике попроще)\n- [Сэнди][sendy] (рассылка с AWS SES)\n- [Минио][minio] (AWS S3-совместимое хранение)\n- [Моника][monica] (личный CRM)\n\n[Кэпровер][caprover] это то как я запускаю и управляю всем выше. Конечно, SSH\nиспользуется в том случае, когда необходимо что-то поправить но запуск новых\nприложений это дело пару кликов. Поддержка Докер Swarm приятное дополнение.\n\n### Бизнес кейс\n\nКак упомянуто выше, вероятность того, что внешний сервис ограничит возможность\nдобавления нового функционала в твой продукт довольна высока. Возможно, это будет\nконфигурация для Нгинкс/Апаче, субдоменов для твоих пользователей, или\nнизкоуровневая настройка.\n\nПеребои это плохо, но еще хуже когда перебои вне твоего контроля. Если есть\nзнания по установлению всех настроек все установить и позаботиться о\nпомощниках, которые уведомят в случае того, если что-то упало – одни\nпреимущества.\n\nСо стороны бизнеса, ты понимаешь, что компании за этими сервисами целятся на\nбольшую часть рынка. Это значит, что если твой продукт не находится в категории\nбольшинства, ты не являешься главной заботой этого поставщика услуг.\n\n### Сообщество\n\nЯ нашел много дельных советов и огромное количество ПО готового к\nиспользованию на сабреддите [/r/selfhosted][reddit-selfhosted] и Гитхабе\n[awesome-selfhosted][awesome-selfhosted].\n\nБольшое сообщество разработчиков ПО с открытым исходным кодом позволяет быть\nуверенным в том, что возможные проблемы с настройкой, запуском и конфигурацией,\nскорее всего, уже решены и их легко найти.\n\n### Конфиденциальность\n\nОчень важный пункт. Как технолог, я понимаю, что вся индустрия держится на\nизоленте. Доверять корпорациям, ожидая от них соблюдения конфиденциальности,\nнереалистично и нерационально.\n\nПростой пример в пользу своей инфраструктуры: миллионы людей используют\nблокировщиков рекламы. Нет необходимости использовать Гугл Аналитику, поскольку она\nблокируется, и также ухудшает репутацию перед пользователями, “кормя” большой G.\nСамозапускаемые альтернативы как [Матомо][matomo] или даже что-то простое, как\n[Эки][ackee] может быть достаточно.\n\nИли ты можешь пойти дальше и вовсе заменить Слэк в своей компании\n[Мэттэрмост][mattermost], чтобы быть уверенным в том, что внутреняя\nкоммуникация может быть в безопасных руках – твоих.\n\n### Итог\n\nКак можно наблюдать, есть немало причин чтобы начать хостить приложения и\nвеб-сайты самостоятельно. Конечно, это вовсе не значит, что мы должны\nотказаться от полезных сервисов, но я получил много пользы от этого.
